The aim of the master's degree program is to provide students with the competencies that enable them to independently practice the profession of an instrumental pedagogue - freelance or at a music school, vocational school or academy.
The study program is either in an artistic-pedagogical or in a pedagogical-scientific profile. The choice of profile is made after the second semester.
Performing arts and didactics
In addition, the program is designed to qualify students for a position in instrumental didactics and methodology at an academy or university. Further artistic and technical development on the respective main subject instrument, a comprehensive overview of learning fields and teaching methods as well as competencies in scientific thinking and working are indispensable skills that are demanded and promoted in the study program.

The qualifying examination consists of a practical examination in the respective instrumental main subject, a teaching sample and a colloquium.
The duration of the practical exam varies - depending on the instrument - between 10 and 30 minutes.
The requirements correspond to those of the Master's program in Artistic Instrumental Education in the respective artistic major subject.
For saxophone, please note the following examination requirements in the major subject:
- Preparation of four complete works from at least 3 different periods
- One of the works should be a solo piece from the field of contemporary music (composed after 1970)
- One of the works may be a transcription
- Sight-reading
The examination committee will select the performance sequence in the qualifying examination.
In the practical examination, the candidate should demonstrate artistic-technical ability, interpretative skills, sense of style and creative ability.
The teaching sample of approx. 20 minutes serves as proof of pedagogical talent and the ability to structure a teaching unit in a meaningful and methodically coherent manner. The student teacher and the teaching sample (lower/intermediate level) are provided by the HfMDK.
The approx. 10-minute colloquium on the teaching sample and on instrumental pedagogical issues should provide information on the applicant's ability to reflect on his/her own teaching style as well as on issues concerning professional profiles and fields of work in instrumental pedagogy.
All parts must be passed. The colloquium will only be graded "passed" / "failed". The grade is composed of the arithmetic mean of the grades for the practical examination and the teaching sample.
