Optimally prepared for music studies: The Young Academy of the HfMDK Frankfurt offers musically highly gifted young people comprehensive musical training parallel to their school education.
The main subject lessons on the instrument or in singing focus on the holistic development of the artistic personality: Experienced and successful professors support the young exceptional talents individually and intensively.
The subjects of correpetition, chamber music, new music as well as music theory and ear training are firmly anchored in the curriculum of the Young Academy. Excursions and freely selectable workshops, for example in physical training and movement theory, mental training or early music, additionally enrich the range of lessons.
The young students attend classes in music theory and ear training as well as the supplementary offers in blocks on Saturdays, so that the compatibility with school attendance is guaranteed.
Integrated into the everyday life of the HfMDK, the young students of the Young Academy gain valuable stage experience through performances at internal and public concerts of the university.
Requirements for admission to the Young Academy of the HfMDK Frankfurt are:
- The successful participation in an aptitude test, in which the exceptional musical talent, high technical ability and the artistic will to express oneself become apparent
- the attendance of a general education school in Germany
The language of instruction is German.
Artistic majors offered at the Young Academy:
- All instruments taught at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Faculty 1
- Vocals
- current passport photo (the following formats are accepted: GIF, JPEG, JPG or PNG)
- Complete and up-to-date curriculum vitae in tabular form (up to the year of application)
- School leaving certificate (if not yet available, the last school certificate is sufficient for the time being), in case of foreign certificates a certified translation in German or English is required*
- If applying for a Master's degree: Bachelor's certificate or equivalent, "Transcript of Records", if applying for a concert exam: Master's certificate or equivalent, "Transcript of Records "*
- For applicants from the People's Republic of China and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, certificate of the Academic Evaluation Service (APS) (PR China // Vietnam)
- Proof of language skills according to the requirements of the degree programmes (see below, Language certificates)
- Please note that you have to submit additional documents in the different study programmes. Please inform yourself about this on the website of the respective study program for which you are applying under "aptitude test". Among other things, letter of motivation, assignments, phoniatric report (voice)...
*If you do not have all final certificates at the time of application, please submit the most recent certificates and supporting documents in advance. Submit the final documents without being asked and in good time before the start of your studies. If you have any questions, please contact us immediately.
Please fill out the online application completely and upload all requested documents. After you have submitted your online application with a final mouse click, you will receive an email from us confirming the receipt of your application.
After the application deadline, you will receive an invoice from us for an administrative fee of 50 Euro. Please transfer the fee to the account of the HfMDK stating your invoice number and name within the mentioned payment deadline. Only when the administrative fee has been credited to the university's account is your application complete and can be processed.
The application fee is charged per applicant. If you apply for two courses or subjects, no further fee is due. The fee will be due again if you reapply at a later date (new round of applications).
A refund of the application fee is excluded - this also applies if the application is withdrawn.

The aptitude test consists of:
- the performance in the artistic major (approx. 15 min.) from a prepared programme
- a placement test in music theory/aural training
- an interview with the applicant (approx. 10-15 min)
Admission is granted after passing the aptitude test, taking into account the available teaching capacity within the HfMDK.
Artistic Major Instrumental
The applicant submits to the commission a list of at least three works (or individual movements) from three epochs, corresponding to the stage of development (the repertoire list of the "Jugend musiziert" competition may be used as a reference).
The commission selects the works or movements from the list which the candidate is to perform. The evaluation criteria are musical composition, technical ability, artistic expression, responsible handling of the musical text and stylistic knowledge.

The examination board reserves the right to present the candidate with a short prima vista piece as required.
Artistic Major Vocal
The candidate submits to the Commission a list, corresponding to the level of development, of at least four works from three periods, including at least one work in German and also one work in Italian.
The programme of the qualifying examination should include at least one aria from an opera (including arias from the collection "Arie Antiche") or one aria from an oratorio as well as one art song. Opera arias and songs must be performed from memory. Another part consists of the recital by heart of a short text or a short poem.
The programme of the aptitude test should correspond to the applicant's level of training and physical development. The assessment criteria are musical creative will, vocal technical skills corresponding to the level of development, pronounced interest in text communication, clear pronunciation, stylistic knowledge and a general predisposition for classical singing.

The test is intended to provide information about the applicant's previous training/current level of knowledge in the field of music theory and aural training, in order to be able to place them in a group corresponding to their level of performance after they have passed the aptitude test.

- Determine and notate intervals
- Determine and notate chords (major, minor, root position, inversions)
- Know the circle of fifths
- Continue a melody
- Comment on a short musical example
Audition:
- Rhythm dictation
- Hearing errors
- Recognize intervals
- Recognize triads
- Making intervals with the voice
In the interview, the applicant should explain his/her reasons for wanting to study at the Young Academy of the HfMDK Frankfurt.
